The Echo Cave

Maya and her brother Jonah stood at the mouth of Echo Cave. Their guide, Ms. Ruiz, gave each of them a small lantern. "Walk slowly and hold your lantern high," she said.

Inside, the air was cool and damp. Maya stepped carefully on the wet stones. Water dripped from the ceiling with a soft plink. "Hello!" she called, and her voice bounced back from the walls.

The tunnel opened into an enormous room. Glittering crystals covered the walls and sparkled like tiny stars. Jonah gasped. "This is the most beautiful place I have ever seen!" he said.

A curious bat fluttered above them and then disappeared into the dark. Maya spoke softly. "We should be quiet so we do not scare the animals." Jonah nodded eagerly. He wanted to see everything, so the two of them crept on, one quiet step at a time.
