A Saturday at Willow Creek Sanctuary

On Saturday, Beckett helped at Willow Creek Wildlife Sanctuary. A team of volunteers met at the gate. Ms. Ogawa gave each helper a job.

Beckett's first job was to carry a bunch of carrots to the deer pen. A herd of deer waited by the fence. They crunched the carrots one by one.

Next, Beckett checked the pond. A flock of geese floated near the reeds, and a school of tiny fish swam below them. A swarm of gnats buzzed over the water, so Beckett waved them away.

Last, Ms. Ogawa showed him a litter of fox kits sleeping in a pile of straw. "They will go back to the wild when they are big," she whispered. A crowd of visitors smiled at the kits through the window.
