Seedling Evidence at the River Dam
Follow the evidence to learn how sunlight and water affect plant growth.
Read the seedling records
A class studied seedlings at a viewpoint beside a river dam. Read the investigation record. Use the observations to answer the questions.
The Viewpoint Seedling Study
The class placed similar seedlings on two shelves at the river dam viewpoint. For the sunlight test, Seedling P stood where sunlight reached it. Seedling Q stood behind a screen that blocked direct sunlight. Both received 20 milliliters of water each morning. The seedlings began with 3 leaves each. After 6 days, P had 8 leaves and was 12 centimeters tall. Q had 5 leaves and was 8 centimeters tall.
The class then started two more similar seedlings for a water test. Seedling R received sunlight and 20 milliliters of water each morning. Seedling S received sunlight but no added water. R and S began with 4 leaves each. After 6 days, R had 9 leaves and was 13 centimeters tall. S had 6 leaves and was 9 centimeters tall.
The students kept the seedlings on the same viewpoint shelf and checked both tests after 6 days. They counted leaves and measured height. They wanted to trace what changed, what happened next, and which care plan helped the seedlings grow more.
