About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students investigate how sunlight and water affect plant growth.
  • Students compare plant observations and use evidence to support a claim.
  • Students plan a fair test by changing one plant need and keeping other conditions the same.

How to use

Read the greenhouse records together and have students find evidence before answering. Discuss how changing one condition at a time makes comparisons useful.

Seedling Shelves in the Greenhouse

Use observations to investigate what young plants need to grow.

Read the greenhouse records

The botanical greenhouse has two growing shelves. Read the records from two tests. Use the observations to answer the questions.

Two Seedling Tests

The greenhouse team wanted to learn what helped young bean plants grow new leaves. The team chose seedlings that were about the same size. The plants had the same kind of soil and pots. The team counted the leaves at the start and at the end of each test.

In Test 1, both groups received 20 milliliters of water each day. Group Sunny stood near a clear roof where sunlight reached the shelf. Group Shade stood under a covered shelf with much less sunlight. Each group started with 9 leaves. After 12 days, Sunny had 16 leaves and Shade had 12 leaves.

In Test 2, both groups stood on the sunny shelf. Group Watered received 20 milliliters of water each day. Group Dry received no added water. Each group started with 8 leaves. After 12 days, Watered had 15 leaves and Dry had 10 leaves. The team kept the pots, soil, sunlight, and test length the same for these two groups.

1.
Which comparison gives the best evidence about how sunlight affected the bean plants?
  • A. Watered and Dry in Test 2
  • B. Sunny and Watered in both tests
  • C. Sunny and Shade in Test 1
  • D. Shade and Dry in different tests
2.
Sunny grew some new leaves, and Shade grew some new leaves. How many more new leaves did Sunny grow than Shade? Write the difference.
