Four Plants at the Trail Center

A hiking club grew bean plants at a mountain trail welcome center. Before filling its porch pots, the club tested how sunlight and water affected new leaves. Members chose four young bean plants of the same kind and starting size. Each had two leaves. They used matching pots with the same amount of the same soil. The soil started equally damp.

Plant A got sunlight and water. Plant B got sunlight but no more water. Plant C got water but no sunlight. Plant D got neither sunlight nor more water. A and B stood by a sunny window. C and D stayed in dark boxes with air holes. All four stayed at the same room temperature. A and C got the same measured amount of water every other day.

After 14 days, members counted each plant's new leaves. They did not count the two starting leaves. A's new leaves were green. C's new leaves were pale. B and D had wilted leaves.
