About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students compare plant-growth evidence to investigate the effects of sunlight and water.
  • Students identify what to change, keep the same, and measure in plant investigations.
  • Students support a plant-care recommendation with evidence from two tests.

How to use

Read the passage together and review what each graph counts. Let students use both graphs when checking investigation plans and writing a plant-care recommendation.

Marigold Tests in the Backyard Playhouse

Use two plant tests to investigate sunlight and water.

Investigate Sunlight

Read the passage. Use the first graph to answer Questions 1–5.

Flowers for the Playhouse

Nia wants to grow marigolds beside her backyard playhouse. Before planting them outside, she and her aunt run two tests inside the playhouse. Each test lasts ten days. Every group has four young marigold plants. All plants start about the same size, with the same number of leaves. They use matching pots and the same soil.

In the sunlight test, Group L gets sunlight through a window. Group D stays in a dark, airy space. Both groups get the same measured amount of water each day. Nia's aunt checks that both spaces stay at the same temperature.

In the water test, Nia uses new plants. Groups W and N sit together in sunlight. Group W gets a measured amount of water each day. Group N gets no water during the test. Neither group gets rain.

Nia counts the leaves on every plant before and after each test. She records how many new leaves grew in each group altogether. None of the starting leaves fall off. Her graphs show only new leaves, not starting leaves.
