Pandas and Bamboo
A giant panda is a bear with black and white fur. It has a big, round head and black patches around its eyes. Wild pandas live in cool, misty mountain forests in China. Bamboo grows thick in these woods.
Bamboo is a tall plant with a hard, woody stem. It is a kind of grass. Bamboo makes up almost all of a panda's food. A panda sits up, holds a stalk in its paw, and chews and chews. A bump on its wrist works a bit like a thumb to help it grip.
Bamboo does not give a panda much energy, so the panda must eat a lot of it. A panda can spend much of its day eating! Its strong jaws and wide, flat teeth crush the tough stems.
A newborn panda cub is tiny, pink and helpless. Its eyes are shut, and it has very little fur. Its mother holds it close to keep it warm. In a few weeks, its black and white fur fills in. Before long, the cub will climb trees and look for bamboo too.
