The Castle Feast
The queen planned a feast for the first day of spring. In the castle kitchen, the cook named Gail gave Ray a long list of jobs. "The meal must be on the table tonight," she said.
First, Ray baked a tray of buns. Then he washed a heap of green beans and sweet peas. He cut ripe peaches and laid the slices in a bowl.
Next, Ray peeked into a big pot of soup. Steam rose up from it. He tossed in a pinch of salt and a few mint leaves. Gail tasted the soup and nodded. Then she set a roast on a platter.
Soon the sky was dark. Bright lights shone in the hall. Ray carried in a pie with a high, golden crust. The queen took a bite and smiled. "This feast is a treat!" she said. Ray beamed with pride.
