Koalas in the Treetops

Koalas live in Australia. Many people call them koala bears, but koalas are not bears at all. Unlike bears, a koala mother carries her baby in a pouch on her belly.

A baby koala is called a joey. A newborn joey is tiny, hairless, and unable to see. It crawls into its mother's pouch and disappears from view. It stays safe inside the pouch for many months while it grows.

Koalas spend most of their lives high up in eucalyptus (yoo-kuh-LIP-tus) trees. They are skillful climbers. Sharp claws help them grip the bark and climb safely. Koalas eat eucalyptus leaves, and they get most of the water they need from those leaves.

Eucalyptus leaves do not give koalas much energy. That is one reason koalas are so sleepy. They rest in the branches for most of the day. At night, they wake up and munch quietly on leaves.
