Compare the Cove Records
Read the class record. Use the record and graph to answer the questions.
Two Places at One Beach
A class visited Shell Cove on three mornings. With an adult, students watched two habitats, or places where living things live. One was a sandy dune above the waves. The other was a rocky tide pool that held seawater after the tide went out.
On each visit, students watched the same-sized area in each habitat for ten minutes. They stayed on dry ground and did not touch the living things. They wrote down each different kind of plant and animal they saw. Seeing more ants did not add another kind to the list.
Dune record: Plants—dune grass, beach pea, sea rocket. Animals—ants, beetles, grasshoppers.
Tide pool record: Plants—surfgrass, a plant that grows in seawater. Animals—sea stars, shore crabs, sea anemones, mussels.
The class recorded these same kinds on all three visits. These lists show what the class saw, not every living thing that could be in each habitat.
- A. The dune had one more kind than the tide pool.
- B. The tide pool had one more kind than the dune.
- C. The two habitats had the same number of kinds.
- D. The tide pool had three more kinds than the dune.
