  • Students use habitat records to support comparisons and predictions.

How to use

Living Kinds at the Sheep Farm

Compare plants and animals in a windbreak and at a pond.

Compare Two Farm Habitats

Read the passage. Use the observation records and graph to answer. In the graph, the tree row is the windbreak.

A Walk Beyond the Sheep Pens

A class visited a sheep farm with a guide. Beyond the sheep pens were two habitats, or places where living things live. A windbreak was a row of trees that slowed the wind. A shallow pond held water beside a grassy bank.

The class visited twice in one week. On each visit, students watched equal-sized marked areas for fifteen minutes. They watched from safe paths with the guide. They left the plants and animals where they found them.

Students listed each different kind they saw. Ten ants counted as one animal kind, just as one ant did. The class saw each kind below on both visits.

Windbreak record: Plants—spruce, birch, clover, dandelion. Animals—robin, ant, rabbit, ladybug.

Pond record: Plants—cattail, duckweed. Animals—frog, dragonfly, duck, snail, ant, robin.

The lists describe what students noticed in the marked areas. Small, hidden, or quiet living things might have been missed. The class could keep adding to its records on later visits.
