Life in Two Pumpkin Patch Places

Compare the plants and animals recorded in two parts of a pumpkin patch.

Read the pumpkin patch records

A class studied two places in a pumpkin patch. They observed equal-sized areas for 20 minutes on the same morning. They wrote each kind of plant or animal once, even if they saw several of that kind. Use the notes and graph to answer the questions.

Two places in the patch

At the pumpkin vine rows, the class recorded four plant kinds: pumpkin, bean, corn, and clover. They also recorded three animal kinds: bee, grasshopper, and spider.

At the compost edge, the class recorded two plant kinds: goldenrod and clover. They also recorded five animal kinds: ant, beetle, rabbit, robin, and spider.

The two records were made in similar weather and during the same amount of time. The class used the same size area in each place.
