The Class Observation Record

An adult took a class to look outside the fence of a shot-put field, where athletes throw a heavy ball. No sports were being played. The class studied two habitats, or places where living things live. One was a dry grass patch. The other was a damp ditch with shallow water.

The class visited twice in late summer. On each visit, students watched the same-sized area in each habitat for eight minutes. They stayed on the path and left plants and animals where they found them. They recorded each named kind once, even if they saw many of that kind.

Dry patch plants: grass, goldenrod, milkweed, clover, dandelions. Dry patch animals: grasshoppers, beetles.

Ditch plants: grass, cattails, rushes. Ditch animals: frogs, dragonflies, snails, beetles.

The class recorded the same kinds on both visits. The lists describe what students saw during those visits. Other kinds might live there without being noticed.
