Priya's Speech at the Community Center
Compare formal and informal English at a grand opening.

Read the story
Informal English is the way we talk with friends and family. Formal English is a careful, polite way to talk, such as in a speech or with adults you do not know well.
The Rainbow Room
1The town of Cedar Hill built a new community center. It has a gym, a big kitchen, and a room for art classes. Priya, a second grader, won a contest to name the art room. She would give a short speech at the grand opening.
2The night before, Priya practiced with her big brother, Arjun. "This is gonna be so cool," she said. "Yeah, you got this!" said Arjun. "Just don't talk to the crowd the way you talk to me."
3On Saturday, Priya stood next to a long red ribbon. She took a deep breath and spoke clearly. "Good morning, everyone. Thank you for coming to the opening of our community center. I am proud to name the art room the Rainbow Room. I hope you will visit it often." Everyone clapped.
4Next, Ms. Ortiz, who runs the center, shook Priya's hand. "Thank you for inviting me, Ms. Ortiz," Priya said. "It is an honor to be here."
5Then Priya ran to the snack table, where her friends Leo and Mei were waiting. "Whew, that was scary!" she said. "Wanna go check out the gym?" "Totally!" said Mei.
