Plant Care Before the Camping Trip

Use a class test to plan care for campsite plants.

Before the Trip

Read the class investigation. Think about what changed and what stayed the same.

Potted Plants for the Picnic Table

A class plans to take potted bean plants on a camping trip. The plants will decorate the campsite picnic table and return to school afterward. Before leaving, the class tests how to care for them.

Step 1: Choose nine healthy bean seedlings of the same age. Each has two green leaves. Put them in matching pots with equal amounts of the same soil. Start with equally damp soil.

Step 2: Make three groups of three plants. Group A gets sunlight and water. Group B gets sunlight but no water. Group C gets water but stays in a dark cupboard with air openings.

Step 3: Give A and C the same measured amount of water each morning. Keep all groups at the same room temperature. Run the test for 14 days.

Step 4: Count each group's new green leaves. Do not count the starting leaves. Also record how the plants look.

At the end, A looks green and sturdy. B has dry soil and drooping leaves. C has pale leaves and thin stems. One plant in C has a long, pale shoot.
