About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students use observations to choose a roof that shades a model waiting bench.
  • Students design and build a simple structure that reduces warming in sunlight.
  • Students compare a shaded model bench with an unshaded model bench.

How to use

Read aloud. Provide matching paper benches, blocks, large precut cards, and tape. Help children build outdoors in sun. An adult uses a thermometer to compare bench temperatures before and after ten minutes; children do not touch warm surfaces.

The Class Test

At a busy city bus stop, people wait on a sunny bench. Nia wants the waiting area to get less warm. Her class tests two model stops in sunlight. Each has the same paper bench. Both start at the same temperature. One has no roof. One has a solid card roof on blocks. After ten minutes, an adult measures both benches. The bench without a roof is warmer. The bench under the roof is less warm.

1.
What should Nia's structure do?
  • A. Make space for more buses
  • B. Keep the waiting area less warm
  • C. Make the bus number easier to see
