About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students experimentally check that rotations, reflections, and translations preserve parallel lines.
  • Students compare image-line directions and spacing to evaluate evidence of parallelism.
  • Students distinguish movement of marked points from movement of the lines containing them.

How to use

Provide graph paper, tracing paper, a ruler, and a pencil. Have students perform each motion on the entire pair of lines before answering, then discuss the final explanation.

Curriculum

Common Core standard covered

Tide-Pool Survey: Parallel Strip Tests

Experiment with survey boundaries under turns, flips, and slides.

1. Turn a counting strip

A marine biology field-trip team counts species between parallel survey boundaries. These are map lines, not objects placed in the pools. On graph paper, copy the points and draw full lines through AB and CD. Trace both lines and the origin. Rotate the whole tracing 90° counterclockwise about T(1, 1), keeping the graph paper fixed.

1.
Check your turned tracing. Which description fits the two image lines?
  • A. Both image lines are horizontal.
  • B. One image line is vertical and one is horizontal.
  • C. Both image lines are vertical.
  • D. Both image lines rise from left to right.
2.
Use your tracing to record the constant y-coordinate of each full image line.

The image of AB has y =  . The image of CD has y =  .
