About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students transform pairs of parallel lines using translations, reflections, and rotations.
  • Students use coordinates and direction changes to verify that image lines remain parallel.
  • Students distinguish evidence about whole lines from observations about short segments.

How to use

Provide a ruler and tracing paper. Have students plot or trace each trial, then use coordinate changes to check what they observe.

Curriculum

Common Core standard covered

Hiking Maps: Parallel Trail Tests

Test how map movements affect parallel trail lines.

1. Slide a Map Overlay

A hiking group uses transparent overlays to compare straight trail sections. Each grid unit represents 100 meters horizontally or vertically on the map, not elevation. Use a ruler or tracing paper to test each movement. A line through two labeled points extends forever in both directions.

On the first overlay, line AB and line CD represent parallel trail lines. Translate the entire overlay 1 unit right and 2 units up. A prime mark (′) labels an image point.
