About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students test translations, reflections, and rotations of parallel lines using coordinate drawings.
  • Students compare image-line directions to check whether parallelism is preserved.
  • Students distinguish experimental evidence from a claim about every possible rigid motion.

How to use

Provide graph paper, tracing paper, and a straightedge. Have students construct and move each full pair of lines before answering, then discuss what their trials support.

Curriculum

Check by experiment that rotations, reflections, and translations move parallel lines to parallel lines.

Shelter Records: Parallel Panel Trials

Test how three rigid motions affect parallel lines on record panels.

1. Slide the adoption panel

The shelter uses parallel rules to organize adoption and supply records. Grid units describe the printed panels, not animal counts. Use graph paper, tracing paper, and a straightedge. Extend each pair of segments into lines.

On the adoption panel, one rule passes through A and B; the other passes through C and D. Draw both lines. Trace the entire pair, then translate the tracing 2 units right and 1 unit down without turning it.

1.
Before moving the tracing, check the original pair. Which observation shows that the two distinct lines are parallel?
  • A. Both lines pass through a point above the x-axis.
  • B. Both lines cross the x-axis at the same point.
  • C. Both lines fall 3 units for a run of 3 units right.
  • D. Both lines have endpoints the same distance from the origin.
