Robotics Team Advances After Uneven Opening
1Westmere School’s robotics team reached the final round of Saturday’s district competition, but the result posted on the gym wall told only part of the story. Teams programmed small machines to move foam cylinders into marked zones without human steering. Student reporter Keiko Tran followed Westmere’s team through equipment checks, scored runs, and a review of one disputed result.
2The field included teams entering their first competition and teams with several seasons of experience. Westmere’s students recognized some school names from earlier events, but several others were unfamiliar. Each team received the same task instructions and the same amount of practice time. Between rounds, students gathered near the scoreboard to compare results and watch the remaining competitors.
3During practice, Westmere’s distance sensor produced intermittent readings. Its display showed a distance for several seconds, went blank, and then showed a distance again. Team programmer Dario checked the connections while his partners reviewed the program. After they secured a loose cable, the machine completed two practice runs without the display going blank.
4The repair helped, but the first scored run brought a different problem. One wheel crossed a boundary, and Westmere incurred a penalty. The judge deducted points from the run’s score, even though the machine had delivered all its cylinders. Before the next run, the students adjusted the route rather than increasing the machine’s speed, leaving more room beside the boundary.
5After the second run, the students submitted an appeal about a cylinder that the judge had counted outside its zone. They requested a review under the competition rules, pointing to the cylinder’s position against the painted line. The judge examined the placement, consulted another official, and left the score unchanged. Dario recorded the explanation so the team could use it when planning future routes.
6Despite that decision, Westmere qualified for the final round because its combined score met the required minimum. The team had not won the event; six teams remained eligible to compete for the top places. Before posting her report, Keiko checked both the scoreboard and the rules sheet. She replaced the draft headline “Westmere Wins” with “Westmere Advances,” keeping the achievement without claiming a result that had not happened.
- A. The readings appeared, stopped, and then appeared another time.
- B. The readings showed that the machine needed a different route.
- C. The readings became less accurate as the machine moved farther.
- D. The readings continued while the students reviewed the program.
