About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students design random-digit simulations that model temperature and rainfall together.
  • Students run simulations and use relative frequencies to estimate compound-event probabilities.
  • Students identify assumptions that limit a weather simulation.

How to use

Have students mark qualifying trials before calculating estimates. Discuss how rainfall rules depend on temperature and how a two-day simulation uses four digits.

Weather Station: Simulate Warm, Dry Days

Use random digits to model temperature and rainfall together.

Build the Weather Model

Use the station's simplified model below. Each random digit from 0 through 9 is equally likely. Generate each digit independently.

The weather station classifies each day by its high temperature and total rainfall. Cool means below 20°C; warm means 20°C or above. Rainy means at least 1 mm of rain; dry means less than 1 mm.

One simulated day uses two digits in order. The first digit determines temperature: 0–3 means cool, and 4–9 means warm. The second digit determines rainfall using the temperature result.
