About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students model a complete tournament using random outcomes and a bracket's structure.
  • Students run simulated tournaments and estimate the probability of a target bracket score.
  • Students design a simulation with probabilities that depend on the championship matchup.

How to use

Have students trace the bracket before decoding the supplied coin flips. Use the final task to assess whether students can adapt a simulation to different matchup probabilities.

Tournament Picks: Simulate a Bracket Score

Model a four-team basketball tournament and estimate the chance of a high bracket score.

1. Build the Model

Use the bracket and scoring rules below for Questions 1–12.

Four youth basketball teams enter a single-elimination tournament. Each semifinal winner advances to the championship. There are no ties.
A bracket entry predicts Ridge and Lakeside to win their semifinals, then Ridge to win the championship. Each correct semifinal prediction earns 2 points. A correct champion prediction earns 5 points. Incorrect predictions earn 0 points.

For the initial model, assume either team has a 1/2 chance of winning any game, independently of earlier game results. Use a fresh fair-coin flip for each game. H means the first-listed team wins; T means the second-listed team wins. Read each three-flip record in game order: Semifinal 1, Semifinal 2, Championship.
The target event is earning at least 7 bracket points.
