About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students design a random-digit simulation for three independent data-use sessions.
  • Students run simulated trials and estimate probabilities using relative frequencies.
  • Students use simulated data totals to compare the costs of two phone data passes.

How to use

Have students work through the shared model and random-digit trials, then compare their estimates. Ask them to justify how each complete trial represents one day.

Curriculum

Phone Data Passes: Simulate Before Choosing

Use simulated data use to compare two daily phone plans.

Build the Model

Use this simplified phone-data model throughout the worksheet. Each day has three independent sessions. All charges shown are for one day.

Each session uses 0 GB with probability 50%, 1 GB with probability 30%, or 2 GB with probability 20%. Model a session with one random digit from 0–9: digits 0–4 mean 0 GB, digits 5–7 mean 1 GB, and digits 8–9 mean 2 GB. Each digit is equally likely, and each new digit is independent.
