About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students design random procedures that select distinct workout cards with equal chances.
  • Students run simulations and identify outcomes meeting both a time limit and a lap target.
  • Students estimate compound-event probabilities using simulated relative frequencies.

How to use

Have students decode the supplied random rolls and record their work before comparing estimates. Use the final task to assess simulation design.

Swim Practice: Test a Two-Block Plan

Design and run a simulation using workout cards.

1. Build the Model

Use the workout cards and selection rules to answer each question.

A swimming team is testing a practice-planning method. For each practice, the coach randomly selects two different workout cards. Every card has an equal chance of being selected first, and each remaining card has an equal chance of being selected second. The team completes both blocks. Use the fixed times and lap counts below; do not add rest time.

The target event is a two-block practice with at least 16 laps and a total time of at most 22 minutes. A successful trial must meet both conditions.
