About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students design random-digit simulations that preserve paired step and heart-rate measurements.
  • Students run simulations and estimate compound-event probabilities using relative frequencies.
  • Students revise a simulation when the session length or target changes.

How to use

Have students decode the supplied random records and tally complete sessions before calculating estimates. Discuss why the order of intervals matters for a final heart-rate target.

Fitness Tracker: Simulate a Session

Use paired step and heart-rate logs to model complete sessions.

Build the Tracker Model

Use this simplified model, not as fitness advice. Each interval lasts 5 minutes. The tracker records steps during the interval and heart rate at its end.

Ari uses five paired tracker records to model future sessions. Each record is equally likely in every interval. Choose records independently, allowing repeats. A session has three intervals. Its step total is the sum of all three step counts; its final heart rate comes only from the third record.
Random-Digit Model
Random digitSteps in intervalEnd heart rate (bpm)
0 or 1400100
2 or 3600110
4 or 5800130
6 or 71000150
8 or 920090
The original target is a session with at least 1,800 total steps AND a final heart rate of at most 110 beats per minute (bpm). One trial represents one complete three-interval session.
