A Wall Made from Many Voices

The blank wall beside the community center faced a busy sidewalk. When residents proposed a mural, student volunteer Dalia pictured a single enormous portrait. Other residents suggested scenes of neighborhood life. Rather than choosing immediately, the planning group invited people to bring photographs and describe memories. The first meeting produced more ideas than anyone could fit on the wall.

At the meeting, residents discussed which memories belonged in the design. Dalia stood beside a portable speaker that volunteers had carried from another room. Her first announcement was inaudible; people at the back could see her lips move but could not hear her words. After a volunteer adjusted the speaker, Dalia repeated the invitation to share ideas.

The team arranged the memories in chronological order, beginning with older events and ending with recent ones. Beside each proposed scene, volunteers placed a brief biography of the resident connected to it. A retired tailor contributed a story about opening a shop. A younger resident described learning to sew there. Together, the accounts showed connections that a collection of separate portraits might have missed.

Before painting, the group held a preview of the design. Dalia displayed a monochromatic sketch in several shades of blue, allowing viewers to examine shapes without debating different colors. Residents noticed that one doorway looked too narrow and that a large figure hid a smaller scene. The artists revised the drawing before transferring the outlines to the wall.

On painting day, volunteers used carts to transport sealed paint containers from the center to the sidewalk. Everyone followed the approved design, but the work still required decisions about brush size and edges. When one painted line covered a window outline, Dalia helped repaint that section. The finished mural included her portrait idea, now one part of a larger record shaped by the neighborhood.
