A Final Decided by One Pass

With the score tied late in the girls’ soccer final, Cedar School captain Samira reached a loose ball near the sideline. The crowd called for a shot, but two Oak School defenders blocked her path to the goal. Instead of forcing the ball through them, she looked toward the far side of the field. Her teammate Brynn was moving into open space.

The pass rolled across the grass just beyond a defender’s foot. Brynn took one touch before sending the ball into the lower corner of the net. The goal definately changed the mood along Cedar’s sideline. Several players rose from the bench, while coach Valdez pointed toward the clock. There was still time for Oak to tie the game.

Oak pushed forward during the last few minutes. Cedar’s defenders stayed close enough to block passes without crowding around the ball. When Oak earned a corner kick, goalkeeper Maren called out positions to her teammates. She caught the high ball and held it while the players moved upfield. Soon afterward, the final whistle confirmed Cedar’s 2–1 win.

After the teams shook hands, student reporter Dae asked Samira about the winning play. She did not describe it as a perfect plan. At first, she had wanted to take the shot herself. Then she saw Brynn raise a hand and changed her mind. Dae also spoke with an Oak defender, who praised the quick pass but wished she had noticed Brynn sooner.

Before filing the report, Dae checked the score with the coach and read each player’s name from the team list. A teammate offered a photo of the winning goal. Dae chose a wider photo instead because it showed both the pass and Brynn’s run. The final caption would need to explain how the two players had worked together.
