A View Worth Waiting For
1My name is Veda, and this is the first entry in our family's travel blog. Before our canyon trip, my brother Sami and I made different plans. He wanted photographs of every overlook; I wanted one quiet place to sketch. Mom suggested that we each choose a stop instead of trying to squeeze everything into one afternoon.
2At the visitor center, Mom unfolded a trail map across a bench. A volunteer showed her the marked route to a nearby overlook. The map also listed rest areas along the rim. Sami tucked a pencil into the pocket of his jacket. I copied the overlook's name into my sketchbook before we left the center.
3The first overlook was busy, so we continued to the next marked viewing area. There, the canyon walls seemed to change color whenever a cloud crossed the sun. Sami raised his camera, but I kept turning blank pages. My drawings looked flat beside the view. Mom sat with me while Sami photographed a narrow band of light on the opposite wall.
4After a while, Sami returned and showed us several pictures of the same rock ledge. Each picture emphasized something different: a shadow, a crack, or a small patch of plants. I stopped trying to fit the whole canyon onto one page. Instead, I drew a single twisting line where two layers of rock met. The drawing was mine, even if it did not capture everything.
5Back at our room, we compared our images with the postcards in the visitor guide. Ours included a crooked horizon and the edge of Mom's hat. We kept those photographs anyway. For the blog, Sami chose a picture of my open sketchbook against the canyon. I wrote the caption while he adjusted the image, and Mom checked the route description before we posted it.
- A. It is objective because it names whom the volunteer showed.
- B. It is possessive because it tells who owns the route.
- C. It is subjective because it names who unfolded the map.
- D. It is subjective because it refers to the family's mother.
