The Kettle on Nana's Stove

1Before the sun comes up, the house is still.
My Nana fills the kettle at the sink until
the water nearly reaches to the top,
then sets it on the stove. Click! Click! Pop!

2At first the kettle doesn't make a sound.
It sits there, shiny, quiet, short, and round.
Then, very softly, comes a tiny hiss,
a whisper like a secret: sss, sss, sss.

3The hiss grows louder. Now it starts to hum.
The lid begins to rattle like a drum.
I hold my breath. I count: one, two, and three...
"Get ready," Nana whispers. "Wait and see!"

4Then WHEEEE! The kettle sings with all its might!
I cover up my ears and hold them tight.
"Hush, kettle!" Nana says. "You'll wake the street!"
She lifts it, and the song goes soft and sweet.

5She pours the steaming water, nice and slow,
for her mint tea and for my cocoa. So
we sit and sip and watch the morning sky
and wave the sleepy moon a soft goodbye.
