A Morning on the Reef

Marisol and her brother Rafi woke up early on the last day of their trip. The forecast said the sea would be calm and sunny. It was a perfect morning to go snorkeling! Mom packed the masks, the fins and plenty of sunscreen.

At the dock, they met Ms. Bakshi, their guide. She gave every tourist a careful instruction before they jumped in. "Breathe slowly through your snorkel," she said. "And do not touch the coral. It is alive, and our hands can hurt it."

Then she forewarned them about one more thing. "The water moves faster near the end of the reef, so stay close to the boat."

In the water, Marisol floated above a coastal reef full of color. A group of silver fish swam around her and seemed to encircle her. Rafi pointed at a sea turtle gliding below. Ms. Bakshi told them later that many kinds of sea turtles are endangered, so people work hard on their protection.

Back on the boat, Marisol took out her sketchbook. She wants to be an artist who draws ocean animals. She drew the turtle, the fish and a bright orange sea star for her collection of reef pictures. "Someday," said Rafi, "you could enlarge that drawing and hang it on our wall."
