The Paper Plane Contest
(It is midday in the school gym. Ms. Gray's class sits in a semicircle on the floor. Each student holds a paper plane.)
MS. GRAY: Welcome to our paper plane contest! Stand behind the tape line and toss your plane forward. The plane that glides the farthest wins. One rule: never aim a plane at a person. That is dangerous.
MALIA: I feel nervous. My plane keeps diving downward.
OSCAR: Maybe the wings are bent. Flatten them with your thumb.
(Malia flattens the wings and tosses her plane. It sails past the midpoint of the gym.)
MALIA: It worked! What a joyous feeling!
OSCAR: My turn! (His plane zooms upward, flips over in midair and lands behind him.) Oh no, it went backward!
MS. GRAY: Your folds look soft, Oscar. Run your fingernail along each fold to sharpen it. Sharp folds help a plane fly straight.
(Oscar sharpens his folds and tries again. This time his plane glides straight and lands next to Malia's plane.)
PRIYA: Look, Oscar! Your plane is a superstar now!
(Priya tosses her plane last. It glides farther than all the others and lands near the far wall.)
MS. GRAY: Priya's plane wins! But every plane flew better after a small fix. Test it, fix it and try again!
