The Bird That Walks Underwater

Rania and her uncle Ilan stood on a wooden footbridge high in the mountains. Below them, a cold stream rushed over smooth rocks. Uncle Ilan was a bird watcher, and he had promised to show Rania an unusual bird.

"There it is," he whispered. A small gray bird stood on a rock in the middle of the stream. It bobbed up and down, up and down, as if it were doing knee bends. "That is a dipper," Uncle Ilan said. "It is named for the way it dips."

Then the bird did something Rania did not expect. It hopped into the rushing water and disappeared! Rania gasped. "Will it be okay?" she asked.

"Don't worry," said Uncle Ilan. "Dippers are fearless swimmers. It is walking along the bottom of the stream to look for bugs." A moment later, the bird popped up onto a rock with a tiny bug in its beak. It seemed unafraid of the icy water.

"How does it stay warm?" Rania asked. "Its thick, oily feathers keep the water out," Uncle Ilan explained. "It also has a special extra eyelid that protects its eyes underwater."

Rania leaned over the railing carefully. Under the bridge, she spotted a round ball of green moss tucked against a beam. "Is that a nest?" she whispered. Uncle Ilan nodded. "Dippers often build their nests under bridges. Let's be quiet so we do not bother them."

Before they left, Rania quickly drew the dipper in her notebook. On the walk home, she felt joyful. She could not wait to retell the whole adventure to her friends.
