Uncle Faris's Umbrella Cart

Every Saturday, Yusra helps her uncle Faris at his umbrella repair cart on Cedar Street. People bring him umbrellas that are broken, bent, or torn. Uncle Faris can fix almost any of them.

This morning, a woman named Mrs. Petrakis handed him a blue umbrella. "The wind flipped it inside out," she said. "Now one of the ribs is bent." Yusra opened the umbrella and found the thin metal rib. It was bent like an elbow.

Uncle Faris pulled out his tools. First, he gently bent the rib back into place. Then he slid a tiny metal sleeve over the weak spot and squeezed it tight with pliers. "This will hold it," he said.

Next, he checked the cloth. There was a small tear near the edge, about as long as Yusra's thumb. Uncle Faris handed Yusra a needle and dark blue thread. She sewed tiny stitches until the hole was closed.

When Mrs. Petrakis came back, she opened the umbrella and spun it around. "It looks brand new!" she said with a smile. Yusra smiled too. She liked fixing things that other people might throw away.
