A Walk to Bell Pond

On Saturday morning, Kiran and Grandma Rosa walked to Bell Pond. Kiran carried a small net and an empty jar. "I will lead the way," he said. "The path will wind through the trees, but I know every turn."

Soon a cool wind began to blow. The leaves shook and whispered above them. Kiran zipped his jacket up to his chin.

At the pond, a green frog sat on the bank. The mud there was soft, and it sloped right down to the water. Two ducks floated near the tall reeds.

"Look at the little boat," said Grandma Rosa. "Do you want to row to the middle?" Kiran grinned. First he put on a life jacket. Then he took the oars, and they glided across the water.

Back on the bank, Kiran knelt and dipped his net into the water. In one scoop, he caught a tiny tadpole. It wiggled in the jar. Kiran looked at its tail and counted to ten. Then he tipped the jar, and the tadpole swam away.
