The Card Castle

Linnea found two old decks of playing cards in the hall closet. She wanted to make a card castle that would reach the height of her little brother, Tobiah.

First, she leaned two cards against each other to make a tent. Her hands were not steady, and the tent fell flat. "Be gentle," Tobiah said. "Don't touch the cards so hard."

Linnea tried again. She pinched each card between her thumb and finger. She held her breath and set the cards down slowly. Soon she had a row of three tents. Then she laid a flat card on top to make a floor.

Tobiah wanted to help, so Linnea gave him an important job. "Listen for the door," she said. "If it opens, a puff of wind could knock the castle down." Tobiah stood guard and did not move.

Floor by floor, the castle grew. When Linnea placed the last two cards, it was as tall as Tobiah. He looked up at it and sneezed. Every card tumbled to the rug. Linnea and Tobiah giggled. "Let's make a taller one," Linnea said. "Maybe one that reaches the ceiling!"
