Read Rosa's first draft

Rosa wrote a first draft of a report about the Venus flytrap. Her facts are in groups, but her sentences are short and choppy. Read her draft.

Snap Traps

1The Venus flytrap is a plant. It catches insects. It grows in wet, boggy places in North Carolina and South Carolina. It is a small plant. Its traps are at the ends of its leaves.

2Each trap is made of two leaf parts. The two parts look like an open clam shell. Stiff bristles grow along the edges. Tiny hairs grow inside the trap. A bug walks in and touches the hairs. The trap snaps shut. The bristles cross like the bars of a cage.

3The flytrap eats ants. It eats spiders. It eats beetles. It eats flies. The plant makes juices that break down the bug. This takes several days. The trap opens again.

4The soil where the flytrap grows is poor. It does not have much of what plants need. Bugs give the plant what the soil is missing. The flytrap makes food from sunlight. Other green plants do this.
