Cleanup Day at Willow Park
Early on Saturday morning, Amara and her little brother Kofi walked to Willow Park with their dad. Neighbors were already gathering by the gate. At nine o'clock, Ms. Delgado handed out gloves, trash bags and long grabbers.
First, the families picked up cans and wrappers along the walking path. Meanwhile, a group of older kids raked leaves off the basketball court. Kofi found a muddy sneaker under a bench and held it up like a prize. Everyone laughed.
After an hour, the bags were full and heavy. Dad and Mr. Okoro carried them to the big bin near the parking lot. While they were gone, Amara and Kofi pulled weeds around the swings.
Everyone took a break under the big willow tree at noon. Ms. Delgado passed out oranges and cold water, and the tired helpers rested in the shade.
Later that afternoon, the volunteers painted the old wooden benches green. Amara painted slowly so she would not drip. Before they left, Kofi and Amara made a sign that said, "Wet Paint! Please Keep Off."
The next weekend, Amara and Kofi went back to the park to play. The benches were dry and shiny, and the path was clean. "We did that," Amara said proudly.
