Season Patterns at Mural Corner and the Taxi Stand

Compare weather records from two places in a busy city neighborhood.

Two Neighborhood Weather Stops

Read about the study. Use the temperature table to answer questions 1–4.

A Neighborhood Weather Study

Mural Corner and the Taxi Stand are two blocks apart in a busy city neighborhood. A third-grade class wanted to learn what weather was typical at these places during different seasons. With adult helpers, the students collected weather records for one year. They observed the same 20 school days in each season at both places.

The class used matching thermometers in shaded spots away from building walls. Helpers read them at noon. They also recorded whether rain fell at each place during each observation day. They counted a day as rainy even if the rain lasted a short time.

The table gives a temperature range for each season and place. At least 15 of the 20 noon readings fell inside each listed range. Some readings fell outside it. The graphs show rainy-day counts for those same days. These records are a sample, not a record of the whole season. The students will compare the records when planning neighborhood walks next year.
