A Room for Abuela
Marisol and her brother Diego lived with their parents in a narrow blue house on Pine Street. The smallest room, at the top of the stairs, was full of boxes, a broken lamp and an old exercise bike.
One evening at dinner, Mom set down her fork. "Abuela is going to live with us," she said. "She arrives on Saturday, and she needs a room." Marisol and Diego looked at each other. They both knew which room Mom meant.
On Thursday, the family carried the boxes to the garage. Diego swept the floor while Marisol washed the window. On Friday, Dad put together a new bed, and Mom hung soft green curtains.
Then Marisol had an idea. She pinned her best drawings of the family above the bed. Diego set a jar of Abuela's favorite peppermints on the little table.
On Saturday afternoon, a car pulled up outside. Abuela climbed the stairs slowly, opened the door and pressed her hand to her heart. "It already feels like home," she said.
