The Wright Brothers Take Flight

Wilbur and Orville Wright were brothers. They lived in Dayton, Ohio, more than one hundred years ago. When they were boys, their father gave them a small flying toy. It used a rubber band to fly up into the air. The boys loved it.

When they grew up, the brothers opened a bicycle shop in Dayton. They fixed bikes and built new ones. But they never stopped thinking about flying.

The brothers studied birds to learn how they turn and balance in the air. Then they built gliders. A glider is a flying machine with no engine. The brothers tested their gliders again and again.

They tested their machines near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. They chose this place because it had strong, steady winds and soft sand for landing.

On a cold morning in December 1903, the brothers tried their new airplane with an engine. Orville lay on the bottom wing and steered while Wilbur ran beside it. The airplane rose into the air! The flight lasted only about 12 seconds. It was the first successful flight of an airplane with an engine.
