Teeth for Every Job

Most animals have teeth, but teeth do not all look the same. The shape of an animal's teeth fits the food it eats. Some teeth are sharp, and some are flat.

Lions and wolves eat meat. They have long, pointed teeth near the front of their mouths. These sharp teeth help them grab and hold their food.

Cows and horses eat grass and other plants. They have wide, flat teeth in the back of their mouths. As they chew, these teeth grind tough plants into small bits.

A beaver has four big front teeth that are orange. It uses them to chew through wood. The teeth wear down as the beaver chews, but they never stop growing. That way, they stay the right size.

Sharks lose teeth all the time. When a tooth falls out, a new one moves forward to take its place. A shark goes through many, many teeth in its life.
