From Peach Baskets to Hoops

More than one hundred years ago, there was no game called basketball. Then a teacher named James Naismith had a problem. It was a cold winter, and his students had to stay inside the school gym. They needed a new game they could play indoors.

Naismith wanted a game that was safe to play inside. He did not want players to tackle each other. So he nailed a peach basket high up at each end of the gym. Players scored by tossing a ball into a basket. The first game was played with a soccer ball.

The peach baskets had one big problem. They had bottoms! Each time a player scored, the ball stayed inside the basket. Someone had to climb up and take it out. This slowed the game down.

Over time, the game changed. Metal hoops with open nets took the place of peach baskets, so the ball could drop right through. A special ball was made just for basketball. Today, people play basketball in schools, parks, and driveways all over the world.
