Life as a Giraffe
Giraffes are the tallest animals in the world. They live on the grasslands of Africa. A giraffe's body helps it live there, but its size can also make some things hard to do.
A giraffe eats leaves from high up in trees. Many of these trees have sharp thorns. A giraffe's long neck lets it get to branches that most other animals cannot reach. Then it wraps its long, dark tongue around a branch and pulls the leaves off. Giraffes spend many hours each day eating.
Drinking is hard for a giraffe. Its legs are so long that its neck cannot reach the ground. To drink at a water hole, a giraffe spreads its front legs wide apart. Then it bends its neck down to the water. Giraffes get a lot of water from the leaves they eat, so they do not need to drink every day.
A giraffe's coat is covered with brown patches. The patches help a giraffe blend in with the shadows of trees. This can make it harder for lions to spot a giraffe. No two giraffes have exactly the same patches. Scientists can tell giraffes apart by looking at their patterns.
