Squid Tricks

A squid is a sea animal with a soft body. It has eight arms and two extra-long arms called tentacles. The tentacles shoot out to snatch fish and shrimp.

Each arm is covered with suckers. Suckers are small, round cups that grip things tightly. Once a squid grabs a fish, it is hard for the fish to wriggle away.

A squid can zoom through the water. It pulls water into its body. Then it squirts the water out of a tube, fast and hard. The push sends the squid shooting the other way, like a jet.

Many ocean animals, such as sharks and whales, hunt squid. When a hungry predator comes near, a squid has tricks. It can squirt a cloud of dark ink. The ink hides the squid while it escapes. A squid can also change the color of its skin to blend in with what is around it.
