How a Tile Floor Is Made

Use clues in an article to learn the words a tile setter uses.

Read the article

Read the article about how workers put down a tile floor.

How a Tile Floor Is Made

1Many kitchens and bathrooms have tile floors. A tile is a flat, hard piece that is often made of baked clay or stone. The worker who puts tiles down is called a tile setter.

2First, the tile setter spreads mortar on the floor. Mortar is a thick, sticky paste that holds the tiles in place. The tile setter spreads it with a trowel, a flat metal tool with a handle.

3Next, the tile setter presses each tile into the mortar. Small plastic pieces called spacers go between the tiles. They keep the gaps between the tiles the same size, so the rows stay straight.

4The tile setter checks the tiles with a level. This tool shows if a surface is flat or tilted. If one tile sticks up, the worker taps it down gently so it does not crack.

5When the mortar is hard, the spacers come out. Then the tile setter fills the gaps with grout, a paste that dries hard between the tiles. Last, the worker wipes the tiles with a damp, or slightly wet, sponge.
