How to Make Butter in a Jar

You can turn cream into butter with just a jar and some muscle! Get ready to give your arms a workout. You will need heavy cream, a clean jar with a lid, a bowl, and a few friends to help.

First, pour the cream into the jar until it is about half full. Then screw the lid on tight, so no cream can leak out.

Next, shake the jar hard. Shaking is tiring work, so take turns. One person shakes while the others rest, and then you switch.

Keep shaking! After a while, the cream gets thick, like whipped cream. Do not give up now. Soon you will feel a lump bang against the sides of the jar. That lump is your butter!

Now look closely. Around the butter is a thin, watery liquid called buttermilk. Pour off the buttermilk into a bowl. Then rinse the butter in cold water to wash it clean.

Finally, spread your butter on a cracker and enjoy the treat you made!
