Magnets Push and Pull

Have you ever used a magnet to hang a drawing on a refrigerator? A magnet is an object that can pull some things toward it. Magnets come in many shapes, such as bars, rings and horseshoes.

When a magnet pulls something toward it, we say the magnet attracts it. Magnets attract things made of iron or steel, such as paper clips and nails. They do not attract paper, wood, plastic or glass.

A magnet does not attract every kind of metal. Hold a magnet close to a ball of foil or a penny. The foil and the penny will not budge. They do not move even a tiny bit.

Every magnet has two ends called poles. One is the north pole, and the other is the south pole. When the north pole of one magnet comes near the south pole of another, the magnets snap together. When two north poles come near each other, the magnets repel, or push away from each other.

A magnet's pull can pass through some thin things. You can make a paper clip glide across a paper plate by moving a magnet under the plate.
