Welders Join Metal
Many metal things, such as gates, railings and ships, are made from smaller pieces of metal. Who joins those pieces together? Workers called welders do!
How does a welder join metal? A welder uses a tool that makes very strong heat. The heat melts the edges of two metal pieces so they flow together. When the hot metal cools, it turns hard again. Now the two pieces are one strong piece.
Welding makes hot sparks and a light so bright that it can hurt your eyes. That is why welders wear special gear. Before they start, they put on a helmet with a dark window. They also wear thick gloves and a heavy jacket.
Where do welders work? Many work in factories or in shops that fix cars and trucks. Some help build tall buildings and ships. Some welders even work underwater!
Many welders learn their job in classes. They practice for a long time on scrap metal before they work on real jobs.
