The Backpack in the Taxi
Mr. Osei drove a yellow taxi in a busy city. Every morning, he started his day at the corner of Pine Street and Third Avenue. One morning, a girl named Ruby and her dad climbed in right there. Mr. Osei drove them to the toy store. After they hopped out, he spotted a green backpack on the seat. Ruby had left it behind!
Mr. Osei drove back to the toy store, but Ruby and her dad were gone. Nobody inside knew where they lived. He set the backpack on the seat beside him. "I will keep it safe," he said.
All day, the backpack rode around the city. Each time a rider climbed in, Mr. Osei asked, "Do you know a girl named Ruby?" Nobody did.
At sunset, Mr. Osei drove back to the corner of Pine Street and Third Avenue, where his day had begun. There stood Ruby and her dad, waving. "We hoped you would come back here!" her dad called.
Ruby hugged her backpack. She pulled out a drawing of a yellow taxi. "I drew this for you on our ride," she said. Mr. Osei smiled and taped it above his steering wheel.
