Kofi and the Crooked Key

Every Saturday, Kofi helped Aunt June at her key shop on Elm Street. One wall of the shop sparkled with shiny keys. One morning, Mr. Hill from the music store across the street hurried in. He held up a key bent almost in half. "I sat on it by mistake," he said. "Now it will not fit in my lock, and kids are coming for drum lessons at noon!"

Aunt June pressed the bent key flat with her pliers. Then she clamped it into her key machine next to a blank key. The machine buzzed as it cut a new key with the same bumps.

Kofi carried the new key across the street with Mr. Hill. Mr. Hill pushed it into the lock, but it stuck halfway. Kofi saw tiny rough bits along its edge. He raced back, and Aunt June rubbed the key with a small file until it was smooth.

This time, the key slid in and turned with a soft click. The door swung open just as the first drummer arrived. Back at the shop at noon, Kofi heard drums booming across Elm Street. He smiled up at the wall of shiny keys.
